Celebrity Family Feud

“Celebrity Family Feud” is an American TV show based on the popular game “Family Feud.” Celebrities compete on behalf of charities. It’s like the regular “Family Feud” but with famous people. Two teams from a family or group answer survey questions to guess the most popular answers. The team with more points wins and can win money for their chosen charity. Steve Harvey usually hosts, making it fun and entertaining. It’s popular because it combines well-known faces with a relaxed atmosphere. “Celebrity Family Feud” has become a popular way to draw attention to important community and charitable issues, as prize money is usually donated to support various charitable organizations.

History

In 2008, NBC introduced a spin-off of Family Feud as part of its All-American Summer reality series, hosted by Al Roker. However, it lasted only one season, with six episodes airing from June 24 to July 29.

ABC revived the concept in 2015 with a new Celebrity Family Feud hosted by Steve Harvey. This marked the return of Family Feud to ABC after Richard Dawson’s version ended in 1985. Unlike the syndicated version, this one is produced in Los Angeles and features Burton Richardson as the announcer. The show has been renewed annually, with an eleventh season announced in February 2024, with Myeshia Mizuno as the new showrunner.

To avoid competition with the syndicated Family Feud, ABC has a strict limit on the number of episodes it can release each season under its agreement with Fremantle.

Format

During its NBC run, Celebrity Family Feud had a tournament-style format with three games per episode. The winners of the semi-final games faced off in a final game for a chance at Fast Money. However, due to time constraints, the format was tweaked slightly from the syndicated version, with the double value round removed. Each match consisted of two single rounds and a triple round, with the game still aiming to reach 300 points or sudden death. Winning teams in Fast Money could earn $50,000 for charity if they scored at least 200 points collectively, or $25,000 if they didn’t. Losing teams received $10,000 for their charity.

The ABC version follows the syndicated format, with most episodes featuring two standalone games ending in Fast Money rounds. Winners secure $25,000 for charity by reaching 200 points in Fast Money, or $10,000 if they fall short. Losing teams receive $5,000 for their charity. In a special episode on September 12, 2021, both teams played for the same charity, and each member participated in Fast Money for a shot at the $25,000 prize.

During the eighth season, a socially distanced set was used due to the pandemic, allowing for six players on some teams instead of the usual five.

In the 2023 ABC holiday special, a single game was played with an additional round and a higher point target of 500. Winning teams in Fast Money could earn $50,000 for charity, while losing teams received $25,000.
