SUMMER RENTAL: CLASSIC CANDY & REINER!

   This is one of those movies you think of when you hear the term “Classic Candy”.  All the elements are there:  ordinary down-to-earth nice guy faces a dilemma that gets him into hot water and features solid laughs.  Even the names of Candy’s classic characters were ‘ordinary guy’ names.  Jack, Bud, Buck, Chet, Del…all names you’d expect from guys played by Candy. 
  There was a line in "The Great Outdoors" that would be just as true in "Summer Rental".  Roman, played by Dan Ackroyd, was jealous of the fact that Chet’s kids worshipped the ground he walked on, and that he wanted to be loved like that.  Jack Chester is that same kind of dad in "Summer Rental" that the kids love.  And you really have to love Candy wearing the Stan Mikita Chicago Blackhawks jersey on the beach!! 
  Is this a classic?  Well, no.  Not in the blockbuster sense of say, "48 Hours" or "Forrest Gump".  But this is a good, solid comedy.  And it’s one that we can stand up, puff our chests out and be proud of our late, great Canadian comedian.
