In the world of video game soccer (or football, whichever you prefer), there are two heavyweights: Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer and EA Sport’s FIFA series. Whereas FIFA prides itself on its incredible attention to detail and realism, PES is a game that the casual fan can easily pick up and play.

Of course, this isn’t to say that PES is not a realistic game. In fact, it has stunningly beautiful graphics, especially when you examine some of the player models up close. The use of real likenesses makes it easy to differentiate players, and while some of the lesser players have generic player models, the developers should be commended for their willingness to create realistic player models.

The graphics look great beyond the player likenesses, too. The animation is smooth and fluid. Jerseys flap in the wind, limbs move realistically, and the movement of the ball on the turf looks like just it would in a real game. FIFA has always been lauded for its slick look, but PES is certainly no slouch in this department, and in many respects, actually looks better than its counterpart.

Of course, great graphics mean nothing if the game doesn't play well. Fortunately, PES is simply a blast to play. Whether you're playing locally or online, the games are smooth, fast-paced, and will remind you of a real soccer game. If you're playing against the computer, the AI is top-notch, and you'll find yourself fighting for wins - which is exactly as it should be. The game is easy to pick up, but not so simple that it's dumbed down. Pros and novices alike will find something to enjoy here.

One minor quibble with the game, however, is in the sound department. Quite simply, the crowd chants and game noises don’t sound as good as they probably should. The commentary, too, can get a little on the annoying sound after a while. But this is what the Options menu is for, and if you find yourself getting annoyed, or you’d rather listen to your own music, you can easily toggle with the sound options.

The great thing about soccer games is that they rarely get old, especially if you have a friend to play against. Playing locally against one or more friends is as fun as it’s ever been, but this is 2010, and playing online is where the real action is. Thankfully, PES has very few problems when it comes to finding an opponent online. The games rarely lag, and the Master League presents many options that hardcore fans of the sport will go crazy for.

EA’s FIFA series may have the upper hand when it comes to league and team licenses, but Pro Evolution Soccer is actually the more enjoyable game of the two in terms of gameplay. Soccer fanatics will love it, and casual fans will be very pleased with the fact that it has a very low learning curve and, above all else, is quite fun to play.
