Wii
One of the biggest knocks against Nintendo is the fact that they primarily market their games towards families and younger audiences. This statement may be true, but it is somewhat baffling as to why so many gamers perceive this as a negative. Throughout its history, Nintendo has produced some of the greatest, most enjoyable video games of all time, cutesy image and all.
Kirby may be one of Nintendo’s lesser mascots, but he’s been the star of some memorable titles over the years, and Kirby’s Epic Yarn for the Wii could be the best of the bunch. The Wii has seen a lack of premium titles in recent memory, but that trend seems to be over, because this game is simply fantastic.
The first thing you’ll notice about Kirby’s Epic Yarn is how the game looks – it simply oozes a style that is so unique and cute, you can’t help but be charmed by it. Each world is made to look as though it’s been created with materials that one would find in an arts and crafts store – fabric, buttons, and quilt patches make up the landscape, and the enemies, as well as Kirby himself (Herself? Itself?) are made up of yarn. It looks gorgeous, and Nintendo really should be commended for utilizing such a unique design.
In every Kirby game prior to this one, the little pink puff has been able to suck up his enemies and steal their powers. This ability is gone from Epic Yarn, and hardcore Kirby fans may cry foul. He now resorts to using balls of yarn as his weapon, which fits in with the style of the game, and the more you play, the faster you’ll get used to it.
The game offers some stellar 2D platforming action, even if it is a little on the easy side. Make no mistake, this is still a game that is suited for a younger audience. The game probably won’t take more than 6 hours to complete, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t come back for more. There are different paths to take in each level, and even a sandbox mode that lets players decorate an apartment with collectibles and purchases.
Most gamers may pass over Kirby’s Epic Yarn due to its kiddie look and feel. This would be a huge mistake. While it may lack a high challenge level, its incredibly charming style and old-school platform feel make it well worth a look.
